CLINICAL VIROLOGY LAB

Overview

The Department of Virology is offering both clinical and diagnostic virology services to TH Kandy & other hospitals in central part of the country.  Laboratory is equipped with modern molecular and serological diagnostic facilities and provides testing for a wide variety of viral infections. Established in 2015 with the concept of expanding clinical virology services in Sri Lanka, the Ministry of Health has identified and upgraded the laboratory as a Regional Clinical Virology Laboratory. In addition to clinical services, the laboratory is functioning as a Sub National Laboratory for Human Influenza Virus Surveillance. The vision of the laboratory is to provide timely and accurate test results enabling optimal patient management.

Sample collection and transport

  • Blood for Serology
Collect 3mL of venous blood in to sterile plain tube & transport in room temperature to the laboratory. If any delay in transport can keep in refrigerator (+04 0 C) for 24 hours. Do not freeze. Haemolized or contaminated samples are not suitable for serology.

  • Blood for Molecular diagnosis
Collect 3mL of venous blood in to EDTA tube & transport in ice as soon as possible to the laboratory. If any delay in transport can keep in refrigerator (+04 0 C) up to 24 hours. Do not freeze. Haemolized or contaminated samples are not suitable for serology.

  • Respiratory virus detection
Collect nasopharyngeal swabs/ aspirates, ET secretions, BAL samples in to viral transport medium (VTM) & transport in ice as soon as possible to the laboratory. If any delay in transport can keep in refrigerator (+04 0 C) up to 24 hours. Do not freeze.

  • Tissue samples for virus detection
Collect small piece of tissue in to sterile, screw capped container & add viral transport medium (VTM) or normal saline/ alcohol. Do not add formaldehyde. Transport in ice as soon as possible to the laboratory. If any delay in transport can keep in refrigerator (+04 0 C) up to 24 hours. Do not freeze.

  • Urine samples for CMV/BKV PCR
Collect clean catch urine (05 mL) in to sterile screw capped disposable container. Transport in ice as soon as possible to the laboratory. If any delay in transport can keep in refrigerator (+040C) up to 24 hours.

  • CSF
Collect in to sterile screw capped disposable container & transport in ice as soon as possible to the laboratory. If any delay in transport can keep in refrigerator (+04 0 C) up to 24 hours. Do not freeze.

Note

  • When you are requesting more than one test, please send a single sample with adequate volume and a single request form.
