NSICU- 1 NEUROSURGICAL I

preview

History and Overview

On 19th of May 1997

A post-operative care unit was established in a corner room by Dr. Dhammika Jayawickrama (Consultant Neuro Surgeon) to provide ventilatory support for neuro surgical and neurology patients. There was no dedicated staff trained for the management of these patients at that time. This corner room has now been converted to a fully equipped NSICU.

2003

Dr. Ravi Weerakoon was appointed as the Consultant Neuro Anesthetist. He pioneered the conversion of this gloomy post-operative room into a dedicated Neurosurgical ICU. Though the path was difficult we managed to reach our goals with in a two year plan. We were able to develop the infrastructure, train medical officers and nursing staff, purchase the essential medical equipment and establishing guidelines for management of neuro surgical patients. The dark gloomy room was converted to a pleasant ICU with excellent facilities and dedicated staff not forgetting their initial vision and mission.

2016

We had the opportunity to rearrange the NSICU 1 according to the 5S concept. We were also fortunate enough to expand our space providing more space for nursing staff, minor staff and storage facilities.

The practice of the use of hand rubs reduce the infection which was introduced as a universal precaution was established and adhered to the NSICU 1. Due to lack of availability of prepared disinfectant bottles we initiated the preparation of alcohol rub in our own bottles. We are one of the pioneers in initiating the practice of hand rub in this hospital.
